The School of Decision Sciences (SDSC) at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) successfully hosted the inaugural Orientation Luncheon for the Doctor of Decision Analytics (DDA) Programme on 29 August 2026 at Rosewood Hong Kong, marking a significant milestone in the development of the University's first professional doctorate programme.

The event brought together members of the inaugural DDA cohort, President Joshua Mok, faculty members and distinguished guests to celebrate the official commencement of the students' doctoral journey. It also provided a valuable platform for students from diverse professional backgrounds to connect, exchange ideas and build meaningful relationships within the DDA community.

The School was honoured to welcome President Joshua Mok, who delivered a welcome remark to the inaugural cohort. In his remarks, Prof. Mok congratulated the students on embarking on this important academic journey and encouraged them to embrace lifelong learning, pursue excellence and create meaningful impact through data-informed decision-making. During the luncheon, he also engaged with students and learned more about their professional experiences, aspirations and motivations for pursuing doctoral studies.

The toast ceremony symbolises the official launch of the inaugural DDA cohort and marks an important milestone for HSUHK's first professional doctorate programme.

Following the welcome remark, guests and students joined a celebratory toast ceremony to mark the official launch of the inaugural DDA cohort and the beginning of their doctoral journey. The ceremony symbolised a shared commitment to advancing decision analytics and fostering a vibrant learning community within the programme.

Professor Choy Siu Kai, Programme Director of the DDA Programme, shared the vision and aspirations of the programme and highlighted the growing importance of decision analytics in driving innovation and organizational success. Professor George Ho, Associate Programme Director, subsequently introduced the programme structure, distinctive features, and learning journey to help students prepare for their doctoral studies.

The Graduate School of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) is offering two English Enhancement Workshops under the HIGH Programme: Academic Writing Enhancement and Public Speaking. Designed around the academic and communication needs of postgraduate students, the workshops aim to strengthen English writing and presentation skills and help students approach postgraduate coursework, academic writing and class presentations with greater confidence.

Workshop 1: Academic Writing Enhancement

✅ Strengthen Academic Writing Structure: Learn how to organise ideas, arguments and written content more clearly and coherently.

✅ Improve Writing for Coursework: Develop practical English writing skills for essays, reports and other postgraduate academic assignments.

✅ Build Confidence in Academic Writing: Practise effective written communication and become better prepared for postgraduate-level academic writing tasks.

Workshop 2: Public Speaking

✅ Enhance English Presentation Skills: Learn to organise and communicate ideas clearly and effectively in spoken English.

✅ Improve Classroom Presentations: Develop practical skills in content organisation, delivery and presentation for postgraduate coursework.

✅ Build Confidence in Public Speaking: Gain greater confidence through practice and interactive activities for presentations and other speaking situations.

Delivered by an accredited professional, the course is designed for non-professionals and provides practical guidance on recognising common emotional and mental health concerns, assessing situations, offering appropriate support to individuals experiencing mental health difficulties or crises, and referring those in need to suitable professional services.

Event Highlights:

✅ Recognise Common Mental Health Concerns: Learn to identify common emotional and mental health conditions and develop a better understanding of the mental health needs of young people.
✅ Develop Practical Helping Skills: Learn how to assess situations, provide appropriate support and apply effective intervention approaches when assisting someone experiencing mental health difficulties.

In mid-August, The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) has strengthened its international engagement through a strategic visit to Tampere University in Finland, and University of Stavanger in Norway, further advancing the University's commitment to global collaboration and academic excellence. Professor Joshua Mok, Provost and Vice-President (Academic and Research) had constructive discussions with senior academic leaders resulted in a mutual agreement to pursue closer institutional cooperation in research, academic exchange and student mobility.

During the visit, Professor Mok met with Professor Jussi Kivistö, Head of Social and Administrative Sciences at Tampere University. The discussions focused on areas of shared interest, including higher education development, transdisciplinary research, talent cultivation and international collaboration. Both universities agreed to explore opportunities for long-term partnership through joint research initiatives, scholarly activities and staff and student exchanges.

The collaboration is expected to create valuable opportunities for students and academics from both institutions. Through enhanced academic exchanges and collaborative projects, students will benefit from greater international exposure and cross-cultural learning experiences, while researchers will have expanded opportunities to engage in global knowledge exchange and interdisciplinary scholarship.

Professor Mok said, "In an increasingly interconnected higher education landscape, meaningful international partnerships are more important than ever. HSUHK is committed to building a vibrant global network that enriches students' learning experiences and strengthens impactful research collaboration. Tampere University is internationally recognised for its strengths in higher education research and social sciences, and I am confident that this partnership will create new opportunities for our students and colleagues while strengthening academic ties between Hong Kong and Finland."

Tampere University is one of Finland's leading universities and enjoys an international reputation for its strengths in higher education studies, public policy, social sciences and interdisciplinary research. The new partnership represents an important step in expanding HSUHK's engagement with European institutions and further enhancing the University's international academic presence.

As part of the visit, Professor Mok also delivered a keynote address at the Nordic-East Asia Higher Education Research Symposium 2026, co-hosted by HSUHK's Graduate School and School of Transdisciplinary Studies and its international partners. The symposium brought together around 40 speakers and participants from Europe, the United Kingdom, East Asia, Africa and other regions to examine contemporary developments in higher education from comparative and international perspectives.

The visit underscores HSUHK's ongoing efforts to strengthen international partnerships, advance research excellence and provide students with transformative global learning opportunities. Through collaborations with leading institutions worldwide, HSUHK continues to broaden its international reach and reinforce its position as a forward-looking university committed to impactful scholarship and global engagement.
