HSUHK Graduate School co-hosts international webinar:Knowledge Exchange via Social Media Among Chinese Academics in the AI Era

On 31 March 2026, the webinar "Ideas and Universities" titled "Institutional Logics of Knowledge Exchange via Social Media in the Age of AI: Chinese Academics' Perspective" was successfully held. The event was co-organised by the Graduate School of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) and the Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE), with support from the Asia-Pacific Higher Education Research Partnership (APHERP). The session was moderated by Professor Mok Ka-ho , Provost and Vice-President (Academic and Research) of HSUHK, featuring Dr Zheng Gaoming, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Higher Education Research, Tongji University, as the keynote speaker.

Research presented at the webinar revealed that academics in Mainland China are actively using social media platforms (such as Bilibili and Douyin) for public knowledge exchange. Data showed that the number of active scientists on Bilibili surged from nine in 2017 to over 640 by 2025. The study suggested that this trend is driven by a sense of professional mission and community service—a modern manifestation of the traditional Chinese "scholar-official" culture—rather than policy factors.

The study also highlighted that AI algorithms serve as both an enabler and a challenge. On the one hand, they accelerate knowledge dissemination; on the other hand, they may lead to issues such as content oversimplification and "information cocoons". Furthermore, the current academic evaluation system does not yet fully recognise the value of knowledge exchange via social media – a key concern for future policy consideration.

Through co-organising this international webinar, the Graduate School of HSUHK continues to promote cutting-edge discussions on the development of higher education in the AI and digital era, while fostering dialogue between local and international academic communities. HSUHK strengthens Belgium ties: meets Belgian Consul General to advance academic and cultural collaboration

In a significant step towards deepening international partnerships, Professor Joshua Mok Ka-Ho, Provost and Vice-President (Academic and Research) of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) paid a courtesy visit to the Consul General of Belgium in Hong Kong on 2 April 2026.

The meeting focused on exploring expanded collaboration in academic mobility and cultural exchanges, while identifying new opportunities in transdisciplinary studies, liberal-arts education, and joint research projects – priorities that align closely with HSUHK’s strategic internationalisation agenda.

Professor Mok emphasised HSUHK’s commitment to meaningful cross-cultural partnerships. “Belgium’s rich academic tradition and vibrant cultural heritage off tremendous opportunities for our students and faculty,” he said. “Building on our existing ties with Belgian institutions, we aim to create more immersive exchange experiences and co-developed initiatives that prepare students and academics for a globalised world.”

Established Foundations: HSUHK’s Belgium Partnership History

HSUHK has cultivated active partnerships with Belgian institutions since 2021 as part of its growing European network, which now comprises more than 55 partner institutions. Key Belgian collaborators include the EPHEC University College (Brussels), the ICHEC Brussels Management School, and the UCLouvain Saint-Louis – Bruxelles.

These partnerships have enabled substantial students and faculty mobility, including semester-long exchanges and specialised summer programmes. HSUHK students and faculty have gained valuable exposure to Belgium’s multilingual and innovation-driven higher education environment, while Belgian participants have benefited from the vibrant, cross-cultural learning atmosphere at HSUHK.

The partnerships form an integral part of HSUHK’s broader internationalisation strategy, which prioritises not only mobility but also genuine academic and cultural integration.

The Consul-General welcomed the discussion, underscoring Belgium’s longstanding commitment to educational diplomacy in Asia and expressing strong support for closer people-to-people links between Hong Kong and Belgian higher education institutions.

This latest development reinforces HSUHK’s vision to evolve its existing partnership into more comprehensive, multi-dimensional alliances. Further announcements on new joint initiatives are expected in the coming future.

HSUHK Research Funded by Chief Executive's Policy Unit Bolsters Hong Kong's Position as International Education Hub

Professor Joshua Mok Ka-ho, Provost and Vice-President (Academic and Research) of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK), was interviewed by the Chief Executive's Policy Unit (CEPU) to share the findings of a research project funded under the "Public Policy Research (PPR) Funding Scheme". In a new recognition initiative launched this year, the CEPU presented Professor Mok with a letter of appreciation, highly commending HSUHK's contributions to public policy research and government policy formulation.

The funded project, titled 'Strategies to Attract and Retain High-calibre Talents to Pursue Further Studies at Doctorate Level in Hong Kong for Nurturing Specialised Talents that will Contribute to Hong Kong's Development', compared international best practices and confirmed Hong Kong's core competitiveness in areas such as generous funding support, comprehensive policy measures, and a vibrant academic environment. The study demonstrates significant progress in establishing Hong Kong as an international education hub and attracting top global talent.

In the interview, Professor Mok emphasised that the true value of research lies in its "practical" application and its capacity to drive social progress. "Our findings not only provide an evidence base for government decision-making but are also expected to translate directly into actionable policy measures, helping Hong Kong become a premier gathering place for international high-calibre talent," he said. HSUHK will continue to promote diversified academic research to support the city's ambition of developing into a leading international education hub.

On 24 March, 2026, the webinar “Ideas and Universities Dialogue Series” was successfully held. The event was co-organised by the Graduate School of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) and the Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE), with support from the Asia Pacific Higher Education Research Partnership (APHERP). The session was moderated by Dr Ke Guoguo from the School of Transdisciplinary Studies at HSUHK, featuring Professor Chan Sheng-Ju, Distinguished Professor and Vice President of National Chung Cheng University, as the keynote speaker.

The webinar explored the transition of educational diplomacy from traditional cultural affinity to AI-driven organizational diffusion. During the session, Professor Chan shared his latest research findings on international scholarship alumni. He pointed out that the effectiveness of educational diplomacy should extend beyond establishing cultural affinity and focus on achieving substantive organisational diffusion.

Professor Chan introduced a three-stage framework of “Affinity, Integration, and Influence,” emphasising that the key to long-term impact lies in whether alumni can effectively apply their acquired knowledge to local practices (Integration) and drive institutional change when holding leadership positions (Influence). Furthermore, the webinar discussed the role of Artificial Intelligence, noting that AI-driven digital networks can enhance the efficiency of knowledge transfer, providing a reference for the future design of international education programmes—particularly in combining application-oriented approaches with leadership cultivation.

Postgraduate Students Complete Mental Health First Aid Certificate Course (Youth Version) to Foster "Learning to Care" Culture

In March 2026, 22 postgraduate students from The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) completed a 14-hour in-person Mental Health First Aid Certificate Course (Youth Version) at The Create, M+ Building. Jointly organised by the HSUHK Graduate School and the Student Affairs Office, the programme required participants to attend all sessions and pass a final assessment to be awarded an internationally recognised Mental Health First Aid Certificate. Now equipped with specialised mental health knowledge and intervention skills, these students are prepared to support their peers and the wider community, embodying the HIGH Programme’s goal to foster a culture of “Care for learning, learning to care”.

In an era where mental health challenges among young people are increasingly prevalent, the course equipped participants with the awareness, knowledge, and practical tools to recognise early warning signs and respond with care and confidence. Guided by professional instructors, students explored a wide spectrum of youth mental health issues — from anxiety and depression to self-harm — learning to identify symptoms and understand the emotional experiences behind them.

Central to the curriculum was the internationally recognised ALGEE action plan, a five-step framework that gives participants a clear, structured approach to providing mental health first aid. Through interactive discussions, role-play exercises, and real-life case studies, students practised applying this framework in authentic scenarios, building not only their competence but also their compassion.

The course also introduced participants to the landscape of community mental health resources available in Hong Kong, empowering them to guide those in need toward appropriate professional support. By weaving together knowledge, skills, and empathy, the programme helped students emerge as more thoughtful and capable members of their communities.

A delegation from Shandong Weifang College, led by Mr Lai Fengbo, Party Secretary, visited HSUHK on 20 March 2026, and was received by Professor Joshua Mok, Provost and Vice-President (Academic and Research) and Dean of Graduate School, Dr Josiah Chan, Vice-President (Organisational Development), and representatives from the Graduate School and the Global Affairs Office.

During the meeting, Professor Mok gave an overview of HSUHK’s recent developments and academic achievements, while Mr Lai Fengbo introduced the profile and strengths of Weifang University. The discussion opened dialogue on student exchange, talent development, and transdisciplinary academic exchange, laying the groundwork for potential future collaboration.

HSUHK’s Professor Mok deepens ties with Singapore’s leading institutions through research and policy exchange under PPRFS‑Funded project

Professor Mok and his research team recently completed a research visit to Singapore from 21 to 24 March 2026, where they shared preliminary findings from their Public Policy Research Funding Scheme (PPRFS) project and engaged in a series of academic exchanges with leading institutions in Singapore.

Over the course of the visit, the team met with scholars and policy practitioners from National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore Management University (SMU), and the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). These meetings provided opportunities to discuss comparative international higher education policy issues, exchange methodological insights, and explore how regional contexts shape higher education and social policy development in Asia.

The visit concluded with a seminar hosted by SUSS on 24 March 2026, where Professor Mok presented preliminary findings from his ongoing PPRFS project (Project No. E2025.B12.011). The presentation, titled “Questing for International Higher Education Hub in Asia: The Hong Kong Experience from Comparative Perspectives” , attracted participants from university management, faculty members, and doctoral students. Attendees offered constructive feedback, particularly regarding the relevance of the findings to Singapore’s policy environment and the broader implications for international higher education in Asia. Their comments will help refine the next stage of the research.

In addition to academic discussions, the visit also opened up conversations about future collaboration. Professor Mok and representatives from the host institutions explored possibilities for joint research initiatives, faculty exchanges, and student‑learning partnerships aimed at enriching the educational experience at HSUHK.

The visit to Singapore underscores the value of cross border academic engagement and highlighted HSUHK’s commitment to contributing to regional policy dialogue. It also laid the groundwork for deeper institutional partnerships that will support both ongoing research and future collaborative opportunities.

Graduate School Hosts English Enhancement Workshop to Strengthen Non-Verbal Communication Skills | HIGH Programme

As part of the English Enhancement Programme under the HIGH Programme, the HSUHK Graduate School of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) organised a targeted workshop on 26 March 2026. Titled "Beyond Words: Non-Verbal Strategies to Stand Out in Interviews", the workshop was facilitated by instructor Ms Wu Jiayi, Virginia, whose structured and encouraging approach guided participants through every stage of the learning process. Postgraduate students responded positively, highlighting the workshop's practical focus as a key benefit for their professional development.

The session was highly interactive from the start. Participants explored the critical role of non-verbal communication in interview settings, from eye contact and posture to gestures and facial expressions, and how these subtle signals can significantly shape the impressions they make on interviewers and employers.

From timed activities to real-time coaching, students learned to decode the unspoken language of professional interactions and apply deliberate, confidence-projecting body language in high-stakes settings. Many noted that becoming more conscious of their non-verbal cues helped them feel more composed and in control — a skill they can immediately carry into scholarship interviews, networking events, and job applications.
