CTL x GS Workshop Series on "Structural Equation Modeling"

The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and the Graduate School of the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong co-organise workshop series on "Structural Equation Modelling (SEM)", featuring the distinguished scholar Professor Cheung Wai Hung, Gordon, Professor of Organisational Behaviour from the Department of Management and International Business at the University of Auckland.

The SEM workshop series includes introductory sessions conducted online via Zoom and intermediate sessions held in person (separate registration is required).

Workshop (1) - Online
  • Topic: Introduction to Structural Equation Modeling with (R-based) lavaan
  • Date:  14, 15, and 16 October 2025 (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday)
  • Time: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm; 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm
    [Participants should attend both the morning and afternoon sessions on each day of the Workshop to complete the entire three-day workshop.]

  • Biography:
    Professor Gordon Cheung joined the University of Auckland Business School in January 2016 as Professor of Organisational Behaviour. Before joining the University of Auckland, he was the Associate Vice President and Professor in the Department of Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He obtained his BBA from CUHK and his PhD in management from Virginia Tech. He is internationally recognised as an expert in structural equation modeling, especially in measurement equivalence/invariance, confirmatory factor analysis, and estimation of moderating and mediating effects in complex latent variable models. He has published more than 25 articles on research methodologies, which have been cited over 30,000 times. He is ranked among the world’s top 40,000 scientists in a study by scholars at Stanford University (Bass, Boyack, & Ioannidis, 2025), according to their career-long impact based on a composite indicator using Scopus data. Gordon received twice the Sage Best Paper Award from the Research Methods Division of the Academy of Management (2000 and 2009), the Best Published Paper Award in Organisational Research Methods in 2008, and the 2022 University of Auckland Business School Research Excellence Award. He served as the Division Chair of the Research Methods Division of the Academy of Management in 2006/07.

    The Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM) conferred Gordon the Life Fellow Award in 2024, the most prestigious honour ANZAM awards members for outstanding service and leadership in management education, research, and practice.

    Gordon is an enthusiastic teacher who has taught undergraduate-level international business, management, and organisational behaviour, graduate-level research methods, and structural equation modelling courses. He has received many teaching awards, including the Vice-Chancellor Exemplary Teacher Award (2000) and the Faculty of Business Administration Outstanding Teacher Award (2002/03) at CUHK.

  • Date: 22 and 23 October 2025 (Wednesday and Thursday)

  • Registration: Please register HERE by 16 October 2025 (Thursday). Successful registrants will receive a confirmation email upon registration.
  • Participants are not required to have prior knowledge of SEM for Workshop 1, but are expected to have basic knowledge of SEM with lavaan for Workshop 2.
  • Hands-on examples will be provided in the workshop. All analyses will be conducted with R-based open source software packages, which can be downloaded for free.
  • Teaching materials and instructions for downloading software packages will be provided a week before the workshop.
  • Only lavaan syntax will be covered in this workshop. Basic data manipulation in R will not be covered (which can be done with Excel).
