Fostering Postgraduate Student Integration into Local Culture: HSUHK Graduate School Successfully Hosts The First Cantonese Class

As the number of Mainland students at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) continues to grow, the challenge of helping non-local students integrate into Hong Kong culture has become increasingly significant for the University. To support these students in adapting to their new environment, Graduate School of HSUHK has partnered with the Key Link Family Center to launch the inaugural CAN!tonese Class. This class is specifically designed to facilitate the cultural integration of newly arrived non-local postgraduate students through language acquisition, providing them with essential skills to navigate their new surroundings.

Under the guidance of the CAN!tonese Class tutors, the students engage in cheerful and enjoyable group discussions and practice sessions

The CAN!tonese Class officially began on 25 October 2024, attracting 35 students from various regions across the country. By 27 December 2024, 10 classes had been successfully conducted. Students advanced from learning Cantonese pinyin to mastering phrases, vocabulary, and short conversational sentences. Under the guidance of tutors from the Key Link Family Centre, participants practiced real-life scenarios in Hong Kong, such as ordering food at a Hong Kong-style café and navigating hospital visits. This immersive learning approach allowed students to not only grasp Cantonese expressions but also understand the cultural context behind them.

The Hong Kong-style café is a distinctive feature of Hong Kong's regional culture. In this class, students learn how to order food in a Hong Kong-style café using authentic Cantonese

After the tenth class on 27 December 2024, students celebrate Christmas with their tutors at the Key Link Family Centre, fostering a sense of community and connection.

Graduate School of HSUHK is dedicated to fostering a liberal and professional learning environment for its students. The CAN!tonese Class, a highlight of the HIGH Programme, exemplifies this commitment by offering students immersive and experiential learning opportunities. Through this engaging activity, participants not only enhance their language skills but also embark on a journey of personal growth and holistic development, enriching their overall educational experience.
