Speaking with Impact: HIGH Programme Workshops Build Confidence in Postgraduate Presenters

Speaking with Impact: HIGH Programme Workshops Build Confidence in Postgraduate Presenters

Across four weeks from late February to early March 2026, postgraduate students from The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) gathered at The Create, M+ Building, to take part in the English Enhancement Programme (Regular Course) —  a series of sessions under the HIGH Programme by the HSUHK Graduate School, designed to sharpen the oral  presentation and boost their confidence in public speaking, both of which are vital in their academic and professional life.

Unlike general language courses, the programme was built around the specific communicative demands that postgraduate students face daily: presenting research at conferences, fielding challenging questions in seminars, adapting complex findings for non-specialist audiences, and projecting confidence in professional interviews. Instructor Ms Wu Jiayi, Virginia, guided participants through a structured curriculum that moved from the foundations of academic speech to the subtleties of rhetoric, paralanguage, and audience engagement.

“I used to dread the Q&A after presentations. This course gave me strategies to listen actively and respond with confidence, even when the questions were unexpected.”

“Virginia’s feedback was incredibly specific and encouraging. I could feel myself improving session by session.”

By the close of the programme, participants had made tangible strides in fluency, coherence, and presentation delivery. Many noted that the skills they developed extended well beyond academic contexts — building a foundation of confidence and adaptability that will serve them throughout their careers.

The class integrates teaching and practice, and students have the opportunity to practice English speeches.

Graduate School is committed to ensuring that postgraduate students are not only rigorous researchers, but also effective communicators who can share their work with impact. The HIGH Programme will continue to offer purposeful development opportunities that prepare students for success at every stage of their journey.
