Advancing International Higher Education: Professor Joshua Mok Shares Insights at South China Normal University

The Graduate School at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) is pleased to highlight a productive series of academic engagements by Professor Joshua Mok, Provost and Vice President (Academic and Research) and the Dean of the Graduate School at HSUHK, during his visit to South China Normal University (SCNU) on 11–12 October 2025. Across two high-level events, Professor Mok shared HSUHK’s distinctive educational model and offered critical reflections on the evolving landscape of global higher education.

On 11 October, Professor Mok delivered a seminar themed as “Nurturing Professionals with Global Vision and Caring Attitudes: The Experience of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong” at the Division of Teacher Training, SCNU. In an engaging dialogue with faculty and students, he introduced HSUHK’s unique liberal-and-professional education model. He also discussed Hong Kong’s development as an international higher education hub, underscoring the city’s strengths in academic support, global connectivity, and its catalytic role in facilitating cross-border collaboration within the Greater Bay Area and beyond. Participants exchanged views on curriculum innovation, talent development, and the role of universities in fostering societal impact.

On 12 October, Professor Mok presented a keynote address at the Third International Education Forum, hosted by the School of Education of SCNU. His talk, titled “Deglobalization / Fragmented Globalisation and International Higher Education Collaborations: Critical Reflections of China’s Responses”, examined how intensifying geopolitical dynamics are reshaping international education and student flows. Professor Mok outlined a three-pronged response shaping China’s evolving international engagement. China has been actively strengthening its global position by attracting a growing number of students from both within the region and worldwide. Through deepened collaboration with ASEAN countries and those along the Belt and Road Initiative, China has seen a notable rise in international students pursuing academic and research opportunities. At the domestic level, partnerships with leading universities in Hong Kong have fostered the development of innovative programs and dynamic research initiatives, further diversifying and enriching China’s higher education landscape.

Professor Mok also advocated for enhanced international and regional cooperation to enrich student learning, underscoring its strategic role in advancing the global common good.

The Forum attracted over 200 speakers and participants, including leading scholars from major universities in Hong Kong; the University of Oxford; mainland institutions such as Peking University, Xiamen University, and South China Normal University; as well as York University in Canada and Hiroshima University in Japan. The lively exchanges underscored a shared commitment to collaboration, quality, and impact in a time of rapid change.
