Graduate School hosts Postgraduate Students' Seminar Series 2025-26: The Evolution and Relevance of Liberal Arts Education|HIGH Programme

On 16 January 2026, Graduate School of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong successfully hosted the fifth session of the Postgraduate Students' Seminar Series 2025-26. In this seminar, Graduate School was honored to welcome Dr Mou Leping from the University of Glasgow, to deliver the engaging lecture titled "Liberal Arts Education in Chinese Societies: Historical Development in Former Christian Universities, Cultural Integration in Contemporary Institutions, and New Opportunities and Challenges." The seminar was well received by students and faculty members, with engaging discussions taking place immediately after the presentation.

Dr Mou Leping's seminar explored the historical development, transformation, and contemporary reimagining of liberal arts education in Chinese societies, tracing its roots in former Christian universities in modern China and examining how these traditions were disrupted, adapted, and sustained across Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

He highlighted liberal arts education as a holistic model integrating curriculum, pedagogy, and community, and discussed its renewed significance amid concerns over excessive specialisation in higher education. Central to the discussion was the localisation of liberal arts through the concept of 博雅教育 (Boya Jiaoyu), which reframes liberal arts education as "person-making" grounded in Confucian values and social responsibility.

The seminar also introduced Dr Mou's current Royal Society of Edinburgh–funded project, which investigates how liberal arts curricula in East Asian universities are being adapted and indigenised in response to local cultures, values, and educational priorities, offering new perspectives on the future development of liberal arts education in the region.

Graduate School looks forward to hosting more such enriching sessions in the future, continuing to support postgraduate students in their academic growth and research journey.
