HSUHK Professional Training Workshop 2025: Mastering Cloud-Based Data Analytics

Co-organised by the Cloud Innovation School (CIS) and Graduate School (GS) of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK), the Professional Training Workshop 2025 was held on 19–21 May 2025. This intensive three-day programme brought together students, faculty members, and industry professionals who were eager to deepen their expertise in data analytics and machine learning, with a particular focus on leveraging cloud platforms to implement data-driven solutions and drive business innovation.

In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, data analytics and machine learning have become indispensable for fostering innovation, optimising decision-making, and transforming business processes. Cloud platforms, with their scalability and efficiency, provide the ideal infrastructure to implement these technologies. The workshop aimed to equip participants with practical knowledge of cloud-based tools and techniques, empowering them to lead digital transformation initiatives and innovate new business models within their organizations.

Held at HSUHK's state-of-the-art campus, the workshop provided a comprehensive and dynamic learning experience. Over three full days, participants delved into the fundamentals of data analytics and machine learning, explored cloud platforms suitable for these technologies, and gained hands-on experience with tools such as AWS Cloud, Microsoft Power Automate, Microsoft Power BI, Simio DES Platform, and Google Colab.

Under the theme “Data Analytics and Machine Learning over Cloud Platforms”, the programme tackled critical topics, including:

  • Day 1: Introduction to Data Analytics and Cloud Platforms

      • Overview of key concepts
      • Applications of data analytics, machine learning, and cloud technology
      • Hands-on exercises using cloud platforms like AWS 
    • Dr WU Chun Ho, Jack: Introduction to Cloud Platforms and Blockchain
      • Overview of cloud computing
      • Benefits for data analytics and blockchain machine learning
      • Interactive simulation game to learn blockchain principles
  • Day 2: Data Analytics for Process Automation and Simulation
    • Dr LAM Hoi Yan, Cathy: Introduction to Data Analytics and Process Automation
      • Key concepts and algorithms
      • Leveraging cloud tools for data processing (e.g., Microsoft Power Automate and Power BI)
      • Process automation and business analytics 
    • Dr TANG Valerie: Simulation Model for Business Analytics
      • Fundamentals of simulation modeling (e.g., Simio)
      • Building and evaluating models and techniques
      • Hands-on exercises to apply simulation models
  • Day 3: Advanced Techniques and Case Studies

The Professional Training Workshop 2025 received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants, who praised the depth of the session content and the expertise of the speakers. Sessions on tools such as Microsoft Power BI, Robotic Process Automation (RPA), and Simio were particularly inspiring. Participants also highlighted the value of real-world case studies, such as stock price prediction scenarios, which demonstrated the practical applications of data analytics and machine learning. The simulation modeling exercises were also commended for their ability to provide hands-on learning experiences that were both impactful and engaging.
