Due Date: 26 February 2025

Due Date: 31 March 2025

Introduction

As urban populations continue to grow and age globally, the significance of promoting inter-generational health and well-being through the lens of age-friendly cities has never been more paramount. The symposium on "Best Practices for Promoting Healthy and Age-friendly Cities" serves as a pivotal platform for practitioners from the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), researchers, policymakers, and all stakeholders from different regions and countries who are interested in the multifaceted aspects of creating inclusive urban spaces to share their experiences on promoting health and well-being of ageing populations.

The symposium aims to explore and disseminate innovative strategies, evidence-based practices, and collaborative approaches that can enhance the quality of life for diverse age groups within urban settings across all regions. By examining the intersection of urban design, health initiatives, and social policies, we aspire to catalyse meaningful discussions and knowledge exchange that will drive positive changes in how cities are managed and enhance support systems for older persons and people approaching older age.

Key Focus Area:

  1. The role of cross-sectoral and cross-regional collaboration for promoting health and wellbeing of older persons.
    • Highlighting the role of the social service providers, researchers, and policy makers, in ensuring age-friendly societies.
  2. Showcasing cross-contextual implementation of age-friendly city initiatives.
    • Examining how different cultural perspectives influence the development and implementation of age-friendly city initiatives in urban settings.
  3. Technological and data-driven approaches for health and wellbeing of ageing populations.
    • Sharing technology and smart city solutions to support inter-generational approaches to promoting age-friendly societies and population health and well-being.

    • Encouraging research initiatives that evaluate the impact of age-friendly practices on the health and well-being of urban populations.

  4. Community-based approaches to fostering sustainable intergenerational connections.
    • Encouraging inter-generational activities and programmes to foster a sense of belonging and well-being.

    • Exploring strategies to enhance mental health for population wellbeing.

  5. Rethinking the role of social and public policies in shaping age-friendly cities and promoting well-being.
    •  Advocating for policies that prioritise age-friendly urban planning and development.

    • Perspectives on intersection of environmental factors, climate change, and public health.
