On 14 August 2026, the 2026 Nordic–East Asia Higher Education Research Symposium was successfully held at Tampere University, Finland. The symposium was jointly organised by Tampere University, the University of Stavanger (Norway), and Graduate School and the School of Transdisciplinary Studies of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong.
The symposium, themed "Higher Education and Society in Turbulent Times", brought together around 40 speakers and participants from Europe, the United Kingdom, East Asia, Africa and other regions to examine contemporary developments in higher education from comparative and international perspectives. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on frontier issues including geopolitical shifts, digital transformation, talent mobility, and institutional resilience.
Drawing on findings from a research project funded by the Public Policy Research Funding Scheme of the HKSAR Government (Project No. E2025.B12.011) (project in progress), Professor Mok presented a keynote entitled "Hong Kong's Quest to Become a Leading International Higher Education Hub." The presentation examined Hong Kong's evolving position within the global higher education landscape and compared its development experience with those of Singapore, Malaysia and the United Kingdom. His keynote generated lively discussion among scholars and policy researchers on the future of international higher education cooperation and the development of higher education hubs.
HSUHK colleagues also contributed to the symposium through both in-person and online presentations, showcasing the University's growing research strengths and active participation in global scholarly dialogues.
