The Postgraduate Summer School 2026, a joint initiative by the Graduate School of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) and the School of Management at University College London (UCL), concluded on 3 July. Hosted at UCL's Canary Wharf campus in London from 22 June to 3 July, the intensive two-week initiative offered a global cohort of students deep academic engagement, cross-cultural collaboration, and professional growth. HSUHK provided scholarships for 12 outstanding postgraduate students to participate in the programme.
Themed Innovation Ecosystems for Grand Challenges (IEGC), the programme introduced students to the concept of innovation ecosystems and its key pillars – Mindset, Product and Customers, Organisation Design, Processes, Knowledge and Technology, People and Context. Through 62 hours of lectures, workshops, and practitioner sessions, participants explored how innovation emerges within ecosystems and how it can address pressing global issues such as sustainable cities, artificial intelligence, and green finance. Course content covered a wide spectrum, including the Innovation Ecosystem Framework, business model innovation, digital-driven business transformation, AI and grand challenges, and the future of work.
Beyond the classroom, the programme offered a rich array of activities designed to complement academic learning. Situated in Canary Wharf, students were immersed in London's premier financial district, gaining unique exposure to the city's dynamic business environment. Social and cultural highlights included guided tours of London's iconic landmarks and networking sessions with industry professionals. These activities expanded the students' cultural horizons and helped them build enduring international friendships.
This programme reflects the University's commitment to nurturing global talent, fostering international academic collaboration, and preparing students to tackle the grand challenges of our time through innovative and entrepreneurial thinking.
Student Reflections
As a student majoring in artificial intelligence engineering, I took part in the two-week summer business programme Innovation Ecosystem for Grand Challenges at University College London (UCL). This experience completely broke my long-established narrow way of thinking typical of science and engineering students and significantly broadened my horizons. This interdisciplinary learning experience will exert a profound influence on my future development. I will integrate business and sustainability perspectives, transcend disciplinary constraints, cultivate holistic thinking, and in R&D strive to balance innovation, profitability, and social responsibility, so as to deliver innovative outcomes that create both economic and social value. Participating in the UCL Summer School was a transformative experience that broadened my academic horizons and deepened my understanding of sustainable development. As a student specialising in public policy and risk governance, the programme taught me that effective governance is not merely about managing immediate risks—it requires a forward-looking perspective that balances economic, environmental, and social dimensions over the long term.
The summer school not only enhanced my academic knowledge but also inspired me to become a more reflective, inclusive, and resilient individual, ready to tackle the complex policy challenges of the future.
